There's a pattern for Totoro mittens on Ravelry, but I used the Totoro chart there to make a hat instead. This was the first pattern where I had to figure out the math from start to finish. One feels so accomplished, haha. Decided to start with a viking braid instead of the usual ribbing. It's so exciting to see it form! I love learning new techniques :)
Next came the Totoros. There were 5 on the hat, and once I started knitting that I couldn't stop. This was my first fair-isle project, and unsurprisingly my gauge was tighter than usual. Thanks to the many tips that I've read about spreading the stitches apart, it didn't pucker (phew). I tried the one-hand-continental,one-hand-british method - I still have a lot to learn about getting an even tension.
The hat ended up a size more suitable for a child, but it's so cute that one just has to jam it on one's head and wear it for extended periods :P
Next time I'll make it slightly bigger and do the crown shaping slightly differently.
