Totoro Hat

YY's birthday present!

There's a pattern for Totoro mittens on Ravelry, but I used the Totoro chart there to make a hat instead. This was the first pattern where I had to figure out the math from start to finish. One feels so accomplished, haha. Decided to start with a viking braid instead of the usual ribbing. It's so exciting to see it form! I love learning new techniques :)

Next came the Totoros. There were 5 on the hat, and once I started knitting that I couldn't stop. This was my first fair-isle project, and unsurprisingly my gauge was tighter than usual. Thanks to the many tips that I've read about spreading the stitches apart, it didn't pucker (phew). I tried the one-hand-continental,one-hand-british method - I still have a lot to learn about getting an even tension.

The hat ended up a size more suitable for a child, but it's so cute that one just has to jam it on one's head and wear it for extended periods :P

Next time I'll make it slightly bigger and do the crown shaping slightly differently.

A happy YY is a YY with Totoros. Pompom to come soon! :)

Melbourne Marathon 10.10.10

2nd marathon : COMPLETED.

I chose Melbourne this year because of the date, being the sucker I am. What better way to spend it when thousands of other people chose to get married right? :P

I gave myself more than half a year to train for this marathon, tried to improve running form and eat better. Training worked for a while, but my injury became chronic. It was very frustrating to come back after each long run to have my foot ache badly- I ended up not doing the long runs frequently enough, hoping that I would be able to catch up. I had other plans - Fiji and New Zealand meant wasted time as well. It was about 4 weeks before the marathon that I realised OH SHIT I HAVE NOT HIT 30. Talk about procrastination. That weekend I went out for a run, tried to go for as long as I could, but failed to reach my target distance by 3ks. I blamed the weather (too hot), and of course my own lack of discipline.

The week before the marathon, I couldn't run at all because my injury flared (ugh). Did a bit of cross training and tried to trick my brain into thinking that I really did 30ks - I should have no problems finishing it. Hah.

A time goal was unrealistic. The goal was to finish more comfortably than the last marathon.

Race day was a disaster. I tore one of my contact lenses (new one too!) Stood in the bathroom cursing silently for awhile before I decided to be mean and wake Yin Ling. Thank goodness most Asians are myopic to more or less the same degree - I ended up stealing a new one from her ^_^

The Melbourne Cricket Ground was cold when I got there. Weather forecast said max 25, min 14. LIES. It was 11 degrees up until 9 am, and there we were standing in singlets and shorts. I forced myself to use the Galloway run/walk method throughout the whole run - people gave me weird glances (what's this stupid girl doing walking even before hitting 2ks) when I started walking 8 minutes into the race. Decided to just ignore and run my own race; I found other people who were doing the same thing as I was anyway :)

I kept my pace slow and steady, hoping the dreaded cramps wouldn't come. My 10k and 21k times were a bit slower than usual, but that was all right. I only felt like a failure when these Japanese aunties in their 50s were charging past sub 4:00 on the other side of the road wearing water-proof makeup and running dresses shouting "GAMBATTE!!!!!!" At 25k I decided to use my music (I have always had the opinion that real runners don't need music - it's more important to enjoy the scenery and reflect - but hey, I wanted to finish this run really badly and I was slowing down at that point). It helped tremendously. I think I even started running a bit faster at some parts!

Nothing else to report after that. I went through periods of feeling really tired and wanting to stop, feeling extremely happy, and there were times when I just staring daggers into space and charging on with determination. At around 35k there was another uphill (!) - I decided to just walk that part. At that point this aunty who speed walked from the start (Ran past her before the 5k mark) CAUGHT UP and continued walking on, overtaking everyone. I decided to give chase but didn't manage to catch her even with running :O After that I just kept my mind blank, miraculously felt happy (it was more than happiness, can't really describe it) and smiled like a mad woman for the rest of the run. The cramps decided to show up at the last 500m but I didn't care; that was the best I could ask for already.

Time was 4:55 (official one recorded 4:54:59 - details!), 23 minutes better than my record last year :D:D:D I was ecstatic, given the fact that I was not prepared and only half expected to finish this run. The massage after that was heavenly. Post race lunch was Malaysian food, yumyum.

Thoughts on the race: organisation was generally not as good as the Gold Coast marathon.
  • The signs stating each kilometre mark were not very visible as they were on the floor instead of higher up stuck to a pole. I nearly didn't see the 40k mark, and at that point it is VERY important to know that one has passed yet another km.
  • People didn't know where to go to drop off their clothing before the race. There were volunteers trying to explain but they weren't very helpful - we just stood around for about 10 minutes feeling lost and mildly irritated before anyone knew where to go to.
  • NO FINISHERS' T-SHIRT. What the heck, we paid so much to enter the race, and the only thing they gave was a St George towel (FACE towel at that)?! The whole point of finishing is to be able to WEAR the shirt around for bragging rights - can't really wear the finishers' medal around because that just looks stupid. I was really disappointed.
The water and aid stations were very good though. Volunteers on the way were fantastic and supportive, so it wasn't all bad =)

Most importantly, marathon goal achieved :D

THE RUN/WALK METHOD REALLY WORKS, TRY IT (whoever's reading this).

I am not prepared for the marathon.

The Happy Half Marathon

Got back to Sydney yesterday with the cold. Woke up at 4am feeling miserable and feverish and not wanting to run at all, but the thought of burning the $80 entrance fee just like that was more horrifying.

Part of the route overlapped with the SMH half marathon, but this was more fun as we ran across the Harbour Bridge and there was only 1 big lap around the city as opposed to 2. Managed to finish in about the same time as the last half despite the runny nose, appalling fast food diet in NZ and no training at all in the last week. Cramped in the last 500m, but that was to be expected.

One of my happiest runs to date :D

The body combat class today reminded me of the good times in Taekwondo. Jumping kicks are love =)

Highly recommended during moments of emo cowpat or after a draining day in theater when one feels like hacking certain members of the health profession with an ice axe.

Fiji

One weekend morning when I was still living in college 2 years ago, I saw a piece about the Fiji Swims in the paper and decided that I had to do it. The 18k relay swim from one island to another in teams of 5 sounded really interesting. The only drawback was it's usually held on a Thursday in the middle of August each year, not during semester break, so ILP year was the perfect and only ever year to do it! Jane and Joyce were the only people I could find who wanted to do the event too, and before we knew it the day had arrived.

You'd think that with all the enthusiasm and 2 years to prepare I would have trained to swim better and faster instead of sticking to the pathetic uni pool with its 25m laps. I did not try to swim in the ocean either. After all they did say Fiji waters are so calm it's no different from swimming in a pool... so even after registering for the event I still stuck to running mostly, with only occassional dips in the pool. The longest session was with Jane where we did sprints over 2 hours - sprinting for her at least.

We woke up at 4am to go to the airport on the Wednesday only to have our flight delayed by more than half an hour, it was a killjoy. The flight to Nadi (pronounced Ne(h)dee, not like awesome bahasa baku or the Spanish way) felt really long as there was no in-flight entertainment. I read my storybook and played with the baby who was in the seat in front of mine. Oh I braided Jane's hair too haha.

Fiji reminds me of the kampungs in Malaysia, but a lot more dry land. Those small one-storey houses with the typical glass windows, the coconut trees, and the smell of smoke from people burning dead leaves in the open... The sun was wonderful! Fiji time is about 1 decade behind the rest of the world though, judging from the cars on the road and the songs on the radio.
Big old yellow taxis

We stayed at Capricorn Hotel for one night before the swim, which was a lot cheaper - or so we thought. We had to take cabs to the beautiful 5 star Sofitel where the pre-race briefing was held, and after taking into account transport we should have just paid a few bucks more and enjoyed the comfort. Taxi drivers are like those in Malaysia too. They don't use the meter- they state their price upfront. Either that or they put on a show of turning on the meter, and switching it off 5 minutes later after saying "You know how much it's going to cost right?" We were too tired to bargain.

At the registration we felt really embarrassed. My 1k timing was pathetic and we were saying it in whispers when asked haha. Ocean swimming? Err... no? It was a good thing that we signed up for the noncompetitive team (the organisers named it Team Bollywood, don't know why), so no pressure. My aim was to have fun, so I decided to be thick skinned and just do my best the next day. We were the only asian representatives (I was the sole Malaysian yo!) :D Our other teammates were really nice and humble people. Leslie used to represent New Zealand in the Commonwealth Games (:O); Annie said she was 'slow and a beginner' - that was with 6 ocean swim events under her belt; Stuart represented his uni; Rob's bilateral knee replacements weren't stopping him; Michael had previously swam in this event; Peter's an uncle with a 6 pack who's an active member of the North Bondi surf club. And there were the three of us haha. Joyce (triathlete) and Jane are faster swimmers than I am, but oh well, too late regretting and being overambitious!

The event started in three waves with the slowest teams first. We had all clambered onto our boat and went out to sea while our first swimmer started the race. With so many swimmers in the open waters we had a bit of trouble locating our teammate at first, but after we did we were happy! The waters were not so kind though. The current was moving us at around 1.6 knots, so much for calm waters. My first swim was quite a shocker. I jumped in, tried to swim fast, kicking and kicking, trying to follow the kayak that was guiding the way. I felt breathless trying to fight the water, and small jellyfish were biting my arms. After all that effort I was going off course anyway -.- I got up the boat after barely the planned 5 minutes. My quads feeling like lead and I felt really bad for slowing the team down. Learning curves are always fun though. During my next few turns I learned how to relax into the water, going with the flow rather than fighting it. I think I actually moved forwards a bit! (If I did not everyone was really really TOO NICE to say so to my face :P)

The one hour advantage we had was no big deal as all the strong swimmers (some of them swam the whole thing themselves) just powered through the water and left us behind. We had to do a bit of 'maneouvering' to keep up with the other slower teams too. We were supposed to tag each other when changing swimmers, but forget that! Boat moving forwards by about 50m with no one swimming? Legitimate! It was quite funny.

Halfway through I became seasick and threw up every time I was not swimming. The feeling of one's stomach just wringing itself even when there was nothing left to throw up was not an enjoyable experience to say the least. The weather was really nice too, which was a shame.

When we were near the finish 5.5 hours later we actually managed to come close to another team! We decided to swim even faster in short bursts and change swimmers more frequently. That pace was actually a lot more fun, and my nausea went away. About 150 m from the finish all of us had to swim together to the beach, with the team time recorded when the last swimmer reached. It was when I was nearing the beach where the waters were really clear and I could see the ocean floor with all the corals that I realised that I was actually swimming in really deep waters - yes, strange as I was happily jumping into choppy waters that were even deeper earlier in the day. I guess it was all the adrenaline, plus one does not think too much when one cannot see anything in the dark waters. Seeing all that made me swallow gulps of water, probably from going OMG! literally.

Beachcomber

YAY!

We weren't the last to reach Beachcomber Island! The last team was, ironically, The Winning Team. Lunch was bad but the Fijian beer that we had to buy made up for it. After that we waited around, sunburned for our boat to bring us to Plantation Island.

Plantation Island is catered for families (baby stalking! :D) and the service there was really good. We spent the next 2 days just lazing on the beach, kayaking and snorkelling. Joyce and I did 4 dives too. The highlights were a few reef sharks, a turtle and big Spanish mackerel! My last dive was 2 years ago, and it took a while for me to get used to things again, and learn not to panic and hyperventilate. The sites were not bad, though I personally still prefer the ones in Perhentian.

The rest of the time we just lazed around, enjoyed the beach and stalked little babies . At night the sky was amazing. Without light pollution we could see so many stars! Orion's belt was so visible, and the other two swear that the moon looks bigger in Fiji. Our last night there we had a romantic dinner for 3 at an adults only restaurant, haha. Oh yes, Fijians love their coconut. They put it into everything! Spinach in coconut cream is an acquired taste methinks.

Our holiday ended too soon. I was just warming up for more dives, but we have work to do back in Sydney. It was definitely a good break, and I have decided to swim more seriously. When I'm not too lazy that is.

Oh yeah.

P.S: Fun fact: The Fijian Dollar is stronger than the Ringgit. I found it quite interesting.

Aroma Festival

Coffee heaven!

We forgot that it was this weekend and only reached The Rocks 2 hours before it closed. Didn't realise it was so big! Vat and I were very happy to say the least. If only we went earlier...

5 cups of coffee, one jaw-breaking gingerbread man, one cannoli, banana bread, a disappointing brownie and 5 aptly named Wicked wings (KFC) later, the week's workout went down the drain.

Reading storybooks on the beanbag is bliss. I shall do it more often now that it is not used as a foot rest (not my fault).

I love books that make one reflect at the end. All the better if they are punny.

Been mostly lazing around, knitting, and baking. Ran a little, but The Foot Problem is annoying me so much that I am training much less than desired. Less is more, hopefully?

Fiji Swims is SOON!!!

Also, Zumbo sans macarons was a letdown. We paid too much for piles of sugar that looked pretty :( I will be back for the real deal.

Sesat

The plan was to run to YY's house in Newtown on Sunday. Google maps estimated the distance to be 9.7km. I ran with my backpack for the first time (not quite a good idea in the end). It was quite cold but I refused to take my polar fleece layer out of sheer laziness to do extra laundry, tsk.

I ran in the right route up until Botany Road, taking walking breaks ever so often because the pack was weighing me down. Got to a section of the bus route. I could have, nay, should have taken that route but I decided that I wanted my shortcut. Kept running along Botany Road when I was supposed to turn off into Bourke St/Road and Collins St at some point - and thinking to myself- aren't those streets in Melbourne??!!! I ended up quite far down Botany Road where the signs pointed to Alexandria and realised that I had probably gone too far. Decided to take a road which would technically let me end up at Sydney Park Road too. It did not of course. I was already supposed to arrive at YY's place but did not want to call for help (can't be THAT hard), so I kept running. Ended up at some Technology Park, and then railway tracks! I was hoping that it would be Newtown station, but whaddayaknow, ERSKINEVILLE, the station I pass by on the way to hospital. About 2 stations away from Newtown, but still. WTF. I decided to call for help then, and in the meantime tried to backtrack to where I veered off the wrong road.

Half an hour and nearly stepping on a dog lying outside a cafe later I managed to reach my destination. Running with a backpack is not easy! Shoulders are crying, but it was quite fun I guess. Total distance of ~ 11.5km.

I will take the bus next week :P

Lazy

I have not been doing the things I wanted to do the past couple of weeks, and that has made me grouchier than usual.

The good thing is, I AM DONE WITH EXTRA FACULTY SUBJECTS and am so thankful that I am doing med because it is so much easier.

This is my latest project. I saw someone wearing something similar on the bus a few weeks ago and wanted one. The 1920s style plus the flower just seemed appealing. Found a quick project to do on Ravelry and off I went. Couldn't be bothered to do gauge as usual, and it ended up like another skull cap at first. Had to frog about 4 rounds (cry!), add more rounds to the main part before it was done. The end product is too big for me, but it covers the ears and serves its purpose. And the flower! Used the yarn that was leftover from YC's Papa hat. This was very quick, finished it in 2 days and that's considered slow.

Maybe a part of me is afraid that running a lot again will bring back the problems I had last year...

I will start tomorrow if it doesn't rain :P

Ace Attorney 'Papa' Hat

This is a very belated post because I was waiting for a picture.

When we were studying for our exam (and getting distracted half the time) a few months back, Ms Yee Chien requested a hat similar to that of Ace Attorney Phoenix Wright's. I wanted to give fair isle/intarsia a go, so I was pretty excited. We went to Lincraft for the yarn immediately after our exam.

I charted out the letters on graph paper before starting the project. Had to tweak the size a few times before I got it right but it was a fun exercise. The dreaded puckering happened when I started the fair isle portion, shock and horror. I tried fixing it but it just wouldn't lie flat, and in the end I was too lazy to frog and start over :P

Pictures!
The original hat

This is the picture I have been waiting for! So otaku~!

YC the model made the smiley face! That took a lot of effort. The initial plan was to use felt but it did not work out too well, so she came up with the brilliant idea of cross stitch, which was glued to a special iron-on fabric. I didn't know such funky things existed before this! The finished badge looks exactly like the original though, so yay!

The hat is not perfect, but boy do we feel accomplished :D

Sunday, May 30, 2010

The weather forecast lied. It was supposed to rain over the weekend, but there was not one drop today. My plans for squeezing in a long run failed miserably - mostly because I was too lazy to get up, and by the time I did I didn't feel like running. It's just better to blame the weather :P

Also bought 4 balls of cotton yarn for another Kim Hargreaves hat! The evil yarn store is having a sale now. I wanted some Eki Riva, but couldn't decide on a colour. Another day muahaha...

It's been 2 weeks since the half, and I have only been running for 20 minutes each time ever since. Have yet to start swimming seriously for Fiji too. Not good indeed. Ugh.

When something becomes routine, at times one stops for a moment to think - Is it still worth it?

I ran in the rain today.

Recipe for happiness

1. Run a half marathon
2. Drink A&W Rootbeer after the run
3. Watch a nice Spanish film

So happy the poofy hair post-run doesn't even matter :P

My run this year was better than the last. The cramps came back to annoy and slow me down again at around 16k, and I finished about 1 minute slower than my target time, but no matter! The original goal of improving last year's time was achieved (shaved 10 minutes off), and that is enough :D

The rootbeer totally made my day.

Now, time to get serious for marathon training!

A little surprise

I was down with the cold last week. When I felt better the weather turned chilly, and laziness took over. My last long run was about 2 weeks ago with nothing since then, and my half marathon is this Sunday. Finally feeling guilty, I decided to go for a short run today after class. The goal was 8ks. I ran to Centennial Park (~1k), but before I reached the main entrance I was already feeling rotten. Although it was sunny the winds were strong; I was gasping for breath and wanted to turn back. Once I reached the park I decided to just take it easy, slow down and take walking breaks every 8-10 minutes. That didn't work well either. I could not decide whether to leave my windbreaker on, my nose started to run from the cold air, my breathing became worse because of the runny nose etc. Miserable. I wanted to quit after 1 round, but not being able to run even 5 ks a few days before a half is embarrassing. I kept going.

Surprisingly, when I finished the 2 rounds and checked my watch, I had managed to shave 1.5 minutes off my usual time for the same distance. That was inclusive of the walk breaks and water stops. Despite how I felt throughout, it turned out to be an OK run.

So it is true, those motivational books about running marathons. All it takes is the first step. And maybe some tissue paper next time.

The Kat Hat

Sister #1 requested a white beanie about a year ago. My first attempt, a simple 1x1 ribbed pattern began while I was in Gold Coast for the marathon. At that time, I failed to check the weight of the yarn needed and the beanie turned out to be baby-sized, looking like a skull cap when worn. I think one of the teddy bears at home own it now.

Anyway, I came across Kim Hargreaves' hat pattern and it was love at first sight. Knit in the round using 2 strands of DK yarn, it was a fun Anzac weekend project. I have decided that I do not like P3tog though. The fabric is a little stiff, but I expect it to keep our heads warm during winter! (yes I will be wearing it too :P) Would love to make another one if I can get my hands on some Rowan Kid Classic.

Was too excited to block before taking the picture.

The sister is happy.

These BMFs were my souvenirs from Newcastle. The Scarpas finally made an appearance after sitting in the box for most part of the year *rejoices*. The Great North Walk from the Newcastle end was not too bad, though I would have loved to explore the longer trails if we were there for longer.

Hunter Valley lookout

In the meantime, my supervisor is stuck in Europe, so compulsive knitting/crocheting activities have resumed. And yes, I am running again too. Slowly but happily.

My foolishness is astounding at times.

ICE is over (hurrah!)

Training has resumed, though not running for one month has resulted in an appalling level of fitness. On the knitting side of things, I am finally continuing RY's project! Am loving the texture of the fabric. With 100+ stitches per row and cabling, it's progressing at a really slow rate though.

Going off to continue work now wheee...

Monday, March 15, 2010

In the previous post about not crocheting anymore, I change my mind. The queue of projects is growing at an exponential rate, and I can't wait for the exam to be over.

Sunday, February 21, 2010

Knitting has been put on hold because of injury (meanwhile, a certain YY is crocheting compulsively to compensate).

Despite the relative absence of certain things, I am content.

The fugly mitten

GRRRRRR I cannot figure out how to make the flaps for the convertible mittens that I am working on now. The reworked thumb already looks wonky. This is annoying.

14/1 Update

Three times the charm indeed! Behold the finished mitten with its wonky thumb and cuff ribbing in its general ugliness.

And when the fingers are needed, tadaa!

The leftover yarn from my skirt was used to make this. I have decided that I really do not like working with it. This project will remain as one half of a mitten until I feel like doing some angry knitting again.

May this year fly past in another blink of an eye.
